Jimi River Expedition: exploration in the New Guinea highland
1988. Published by Oxford University Press, Melbourne.
A collection of photos taken on an expedition into the highlands of Papua New Guinea in 1950.
The expedition to find a white bird of paradise was sponsored by Australian manufacturer, Edward Hallstrom, who had an obsession with white animals. It was led by Captain Neptune Blood and included Captain Alfred Vogel, a retired Swedish cavalry officer who took film footage of the expedition (which is extant). Well-known Australian photographer, Douglass Baglin, recorded the unusual group that included Blood’s wife and two-year-old daughter. Douglass’s superb black and white photos form the basis of this publication.
